Orthodontics & Invisalign in Melbourne's CBD

orthodontics invisalign melbourne cbdOrthodontics is a branch of dentistry concerned with correcting teeth positions and improving dental occlusion or bite (the way the teeth come together) as well as improving overall facial aesthetics.

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic assessment for children at age six or seven, as this is when the first adult teeth typically appear and when developmental problems can be detected.

Treatment for young children is usually aimed at dealing with functional problems. Early intervention is designed to eliminate or simplify any later need for further orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontics is not just for children. These days more and more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment and there is a greater variety of treatment options available.

orthodontics melbourne vicConventional Orthodontics in Melbourne CBD

Conventional Orthodontics is attaching brackets to each tooth and utilising wires to straighten and align teeth. This continues to be the most effective form of orthodontic treatment. But modern day braces are smaller and more discrete. They can be metal or clear ceramic and the forces applied are far more gentle than in the past. Also, here at Dimos Dental the braces for each individual patient are customised for that patient's particular needs- leading to faster treatment with superior results.

invisalign melbourne cbdInvisalign

Invisalign is a very popular alternative to braces. It consists of a series of nearly invisible aligners. Typically, every 2 weeks you will change into the next set of aligners. The aligners are individually manufactured specifically for your teeth alone. As you replace each set of aligners, your teeth will move a little, and slowly you will achieve your desired results, Straight teeth!

There are many advantages to this type of treatment compared to regular braces:

  • Virtually invisible – they are a great alternative if you are concerned about the look of metal braces
  • More comfortable – as there are no metal brackets, there is less irritation to the inside of the mouth
  • Maintaining Oral hygiene – because the aligners are removable, they are easier to clean
  • Less pressure – only a small amount of pressure can be applied with Invisalign, therefore it can be more comfortable each time you change aligners.

Invisalign does have its limitations. Because less pressure is applied there are some cases that it may not be suitable for. Please see us for a consultation for Dr Dimos to assess if your teeth will be suitable for this type of treatment.

myobrace melbourne vicMyobrace

Myobrace is a no brace alternative therapy. The treatment uses myofunctional orthodontic techniques to correct oral habits and retrain the muscle patterns that have influenced the position of the teeth. It consists of a series of appliances that aim to correct the underlying causes of crooked teeth and these are worn 1-2 hours each day and overnight while sleeping.

For straight teeth we need:

  • Lips together all the time, except for eating and speaking
  • Our tongue resting on the roof of our mouth
  • Breathing through our nose
  • No muscle activity around our lips or cheeks when we swallowing

Myobrace aims to correct these problems. Where the teeth are positioned is a result of where they have been pushed by the muscles of face and the tongue. Poor oral habits have adverse effects on a child’s growth and development, and not just in their mouths!

DNA appliance melbourne cbdEpigenetic Orthodontics (DNA appliance)

The Daytime-Nighttime Night Appliance™ (or DNA Aplliance™) appliance is a removable appliance which uses the principles of Epigenetic Orthodontics. The DNA Appliance allows the body to gently correct the position of the teeth in it's own natural way.

The appliance is worn in the evening and over night during the body's natural circadian rhythm, to activate the wearers naturally occurring genes to correct the under development in the craniofacial region. The DNA appliance treats teeth, jaws, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) , face and airways, for optimal growth and development. The bones in the craniofacial region are slowly remodelled making a foundational correction to the structure of the airway non-surgically.

The goals of treatment is by gently expanding the upper arch in a three dimensional aspect, including expanding the size of the nasal cavity. As the upper arch is widened, the lower arch is unlocked which allows it to move forward. As the lower jaw moves forwards the tongue is pulled forward along with the soft tissue in the throat, which increases airway space. The DNA appliance can be useful in the treatment of TMJ disorders, non-surgical expansion of airway space and aid in reducing or even eliminating Obstructive Sleep Aponea and snoring in some cases.

brace cleaning melbourne cbdCleaning Around Braces

Having braces means paying a little more attention to your teeth during cleaning and eating. No one wants food stuck in their braces, baaaad breath and red angry gums!

If you put in some extra care, your teeth & gums can stay looking beautiful and healthy not only while you have braces on, but for life.

The information below will list different ways to clean and care for your teeth and braces. However, if you find that you are struggling to clean or have any questions, please feel free to bring your next dental hygiene appointment forward and discuss these challenges with your Dental Hygienist.

Why is it so important?

Braces are tricky! Braces have many little spaces to trap bacteria and catch food, and therefore there’s a greater risk for decay if we’re not cleaning properly. No one wants to have braces for months, only to have decay holes everywhere when the teeth are finally straight!

5 Toothbrushing Tips

  1. Brushing morning, night & after eating with a toothpaste containing fluoride.  If you cannot brush right away after a meal, be sure to rinse your mouth with water. Brushing takes a little longer with braces, so give yourself enough time.

  2. Use an Electric Toothbrush - they make brushing so much easier & allows you to focus on where your brush is cleaning.

  3. Angle the toothbrush at 45° towards the brackets. This helps the bristles of the toothbrush to find their way behind the wire and around the edge of the brackets.

  4. Careful cleaning at the gumline! Feel bristles gently on gums! Remember that if you notice your gums bleeding, that is your body telling you that there has been germs in that area - clean the germs away and the gums will heal!

  5. Every evening, apply Tooth Mousse Plus after brushing. Do not rinse for 30mins or just leave on overnight. Sip only water, no eating.

Cleaning in Between Every Day

Waterjet cleaning - Waterpik

A waterjet cleaner like the Waterpik is an effective and quick way to make cleaning around brackets and in between teeth EASY! Blast away food and plaque to keep your teeth and gums healthy!

Piksters - Interdental Brushes

Interdental brushes are a fantastic way to clean around your brackets and in between the teeth. They are tiny little bottle-brushes

  • So easy!
  • Can be done anywhere, any time -- Don’t need a mirror or bathroom sink!
  • Reach behind the wires & around the brackets!
  • Between the teeth - if there’s room!
  • Always use after eating! Don’t leave food behind!

Standard floss alone isn’t much help when you have braces on, as the wires get in the way. Special types of floss have been designed so that they can be threaded underneath the wires.

  • Superfloss or X-Floss

  • Floss threaders (reusable)

Keeping Teeth Strong!

Tooth Mousse Plus

Tooth Mousse Plus is a Calcium & Fluoride creme used to keep your teeth strong. Weakened by bacteria, acid and decay, teeth need to have extra minerals nearby to strengthen up again.

  • Every evening, apply Tooth Mousse Plus after brushing. Do not rinse for 30mins or just leave on overnight. Sip only water, no eating.
  • Apply after swimming! Pool water acids can soften teeth and erode them. Always rinse with fresh water after swimming, apply Tooth Mousse Plus and don’t brush for at least 30mins!

Mouthwash can be helpful to keep your mouth feeling fresh. However, it DOES NOT clean your teeth! Once you’ve cleaned the plaque and food from your teeth (in the ways described above), you can swish with an ALCOHOL-FREE mouthwash that contains fluoride for 1 minute, such as AP24.

NOTE: If you are using Tooth Mousse Plus at night time, you do not need to use a mouthwash beforehand.

You will need to make a few dietary adjustments to protect your new braces and ensure your treatment goes smoothly. But you don't have to worry because there are still many tasty foods that you can still enjoy!

General Tips

  • Don’t feed the bugs! Avoid sugary/starchy foods and drinks as the germs in your mouth use these foods to make acid and burrow holes in teeth.
  • Drink plenty of water! This will help keep your mouth and breath fresh by cleansing away bacteria and protective saliva
